I understand you Steve Carell.
It is going to be hard to leave Sydney.

Hometown
Life seems punctuated with scenes of leaving. As a teenager I had a ill-conceived long-distance relationship that reached an emotional crescendo every couple of months at the airport. Since then I’ve managed to repeat the pantomime in variation every couple of years. Today I decided that I’ll leave Sydney and move back to my hometown of Brisbane. It may seem like a strange choice...

1812 Overture
This evening I saw the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture at the Domain as part of the Sydney Festival, complete with cannons and fireworks at the finale. It was one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen. I think what added to it is that my friend (who is currently reading War and Peace) and I were sitting with a mother and her young kids, and...

Email to Vimeo
I’ve been a happy Vimeo Plus customer since the Plus membership introduction, however given your stance against SOPA and by extension against creators’ right of ownership I can no longer support you in this way. Furthermore I find it very disingenuous that you would use the term “censorship” where it is inapplicable, and in doing so promote misinformation. Please...

I am now house-hunting
Looking for a quiet room in a sharehouse/apartment in or around Newtown. Max $200/w. To move within a month. Let me know if you have any leads. Ideally something like this, but willing to compromise:

Ultra Culture review of David Fincher’s mess of a film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. He articulates my issues with the film but with far more forethought. Although I will add that for a film that so loudly postures as “an indictment of institutionalised misogyny” it spends an inordinate amount of time letting us look at Rooney Mara’s breasts.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
I’m not sure if there is an embargo on this film or not. They usually do that when a big-budget film is really bad. They took our phones before the screening too. Anyway, spoilers, but The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is boring. It’s 158 minutes of Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara looking at photographs and books and using their MacBooks and then the killer is the only other character in...

Louis C.K. can’t stop the pirates →
To all those jerks who are railing against SOPA because it’s not the utopian ideal for protecting artists’ intellectual property: this is what’s happening now, in the absence of any protection. Even when a guy releases his work DRM-free in good faith for the benefit of his fans, for the measly sum of $5, and with a plea to buy instead of steal, people still steal it. And they...

Gollum on DreamHost!
I am pretty happy with this. I managed to get Gollum running on my DreamHost shared hosting environment (on Passenger). Now I have a Ruby wiki engine running from a Git repository of plain Markdown files in flat folder structure. Yes. I can edit through the web, or the Git repo online or offline. Result: http://wiki.rnkn.net/ I’m thinking of writing a big step-by-step tutorial because...

whitewhine: There’s been a lot of criticism over the years of Facebook and me, Mark Zuckerberg, and I just wanted to let you know that I really do listen to the really insightful, interesting and constructive things you little fuckers have to say. For example, I know you think the million “people you may know” features I’ve added to the site are annoying. But you know what’s really annoying? A...

WatchWatch
A couple of months ago I was in my hometown Brisbane and good friend Jesse told me he was making a hip hop album under the moniker Future/Space/Dead/Sound (a play on Justin Timberlake’s). Yesterday he dropped this epic 23-track album, hip hop infused post-punk onboard the starship Nostromo. It’s like a fork of early/great Liars stuff that goes off into outer space. Amazing.
